Early day

4 for 7 on sails and 4 big dorado with some tired customers who caught what they came to catch and returned to the dock a little early.    Good fishing.

August 16-19, 2014

Greetings from Los Suenos Costa Rica:

    August 16, 2014; Today, my old friend Larry Dahlberg, (Hunt for Big Fish, TV program), along with his camera man Dan, arrived at the vessel "Dragin Fly", in the Los Suenos Marina, to spend a couple of days with me at destination Blue Marlin-X, where we planned to catch some Blue Marlin on fly together. Captain James Smith, with mate's Alberto and Marcos, loaded all of the gear and we headed out at 2:00 PM. At 4 PM, we raised a sailfish, I made a cast, hooked that sailfish, fought it for five minutes, and then released it after retrieving the fly. We continued fishing until dark, had dinner, and went to bed at 8:00 PM while the boat headed out arriving at location BM-X at 6:00 AM.

    August 17, 2014:First let me say that, Larry Dahlberg and I have been fishing buddies and good friends since early in 1980, during my career as a fishing guide, I have fished with many great anglers, My pal Larry, in my opinion, is one of the top anglers that I ever fished with.  The weather so far on this trip is cloudy, windy, with quite a bit of rain on and off, we raised a Blue Marlin, soon after starting, Larry made a good presentation, the fish ate the fly, ran off a short distance, turned, ran back toward the boat, and the fly came out. Later today in the rain Larry hooked a Marlin, it ran out, stopped, and then kicked in the after burner and broke the 20 pound tippet. The score today, three Blue Marlin raised, two Marlin bites, Jake and Larry zero caught Marlin.

    August 18, 2014; More clouds, wind, rain, while the surface water temperature is now 83.5 (it was between 85 and 87 during June and July). We worked hard, raised a total of four Blue Marlin today, Larry hooked two of them, one broke the 20 pound tippet, while the other fish after jumping, and putting on a great show, pulled the hook and came off. When it got dark, we had a good dinner, talked and laughed about our many experiences and fun fishing trips, and got a good night sleep. Four Raised, two bites, No Marlin!

    August 19, 2014: Today we fished half a day, raised no marlin and got no bites, awe headed back to Los Suenos Marina arriving at 4 PM. Total Score for this trip was seven Blue Marlin raised, four of them bit the fly, two broke off while two spit the hook, we raised one sailfish which we caught and released.This was my last Blue Marlin on Fly trip for this summer, and the only trip where we didn't catch several Blue Marlin on fly. For me, spending this last couple of days aboard "Dragin Fly" with my friend was great, I got to explain my Blue Marlin fly fishing system to an angler who got it right away, and as usual, I learned lots of new stuff from Larry. Tonight at the Los Suenos resort, Larry, Dan, and I met up with my buddy Jack Callion along with his partner Mike, we had a great dinner at the Italian restaurant, where we discussed this great fishery.  

    August 20, 2014; After breakfast, we visited my old friend Dick Tanner, at his tackle store, spent a few minutes talking about Costa Rica, The fishing here, and then went back to check out of my Condo for our trip home. I really enjoyed my time spent with my old friend, and we plan to do this again together next summer. 

    August 21, 2014: Home in North Carolina! Next year my plan is to operate my "Blue Marlin Fly Fishing Schools" aboard "Dragin Fly" out of Los Suenos resort, between June first and August 15 of 2015. At this time there are six people who have contacted me to plan there Blue Marlin on fly trip with me during next summer. Should you want to catch a Blue Marlin on fly, we are now experiencing the best Blue Marlin fly fishing ever seen on this planet! Although we didn't raise 50 marlin on our last overnighter to the FADs, catching 3 blue marlin on the fly is still amazing and something that can only be done in a few places in the world.    Back at Los Suenos for a quick trip before heading back out to the deep, a couple of sails, couple of big dorado and a BIG marlin

Greetings from Los Suenos Costa Rica:

On August, 10, 2014, I arrived in Costa Rica, met up with my friend Danny Cline from West Virginia, at the airport, collected our baggage, met up with my driver and headed down to Los Suenos resort. We arrived and checked into our condo at 2:30 PM, jumped into the golf cart, drove to the marina and had a good lunch. After lunch we headed back to the condo where George Maybee from Denver Colorado, met us as the second student/angler to fish in this "Blue Marlin on fly School". We had a great dinner in the Italian restaurant at the marina came back to the condo and got a good night sleep.
August 11, 2014, after we had breakfast at "The Hook Up" at the marina, we went to the provision store in the marina, bought some groceries, took them over to "Dragin Fly, where Marcos and Alberto put them aboard. We went back to the condo, showered, packed light for the boat trip, and headed back to the boat at 12:30 PM. We boarded Dragin Fly, then Captain James Smith headed out of the marina about 1:PM. After an hour, roughly 24 miles offshore, we slowed to 8 knots and deployed our teasers. Danny Cline is here to improve his skills as a great fly angler, before this trip he had caught three blue marlin (all in Guatemala), while George Maybee, at 76 years of age, has caught plenty of Sailfish on fly along with several Striped Marlin on fly, however this trip is for George to catch his first Blue Marlin on fly. As we headed out to "Destination Blue Marlin X" (destination BM-X), we raised four sailfish, two of them teased in and bit the fly as presented by Danny, the first one pulled the hook, while the second one, Danny caught and released a nice 80 pound sailfish.

August, 12, 2014, We arrived at BM-X at 6:00 AM, deployed our teasers after breakfast, and then began looking for Blue Marlin. At Noon we had raised 2 Blue Marlin, both did not tease in and we had no bites so far today. James and I decided to head over to BM-X-2 which is over 20 miles away, we arrived there at 1:30, fished until dark and never saw a fish. When it got dark, we began chugging back to the original destination BM-X, while we had a great dinner, took showers and went to bed, two fish raised, no bites, no fish, today! (My worse day here ever)
August, 13, 2014, At 4:30 AM we woke up to the smell of hot Costa Rican coffee brewing and sausage cooking, after breakfast we pulled in the sea anchor, and deployed our teasers. Before sunrise Danny cast to the first Blue Marlin of the day, it ate the fly and headed straight down. After that fish had taken out 400 yards of drag, it kicked in the after burner and headed straight up to the surface, on the way up the 20 pound class tippet broke.  Later we raised another fish that didn't tease in then George hooked, fought , and then Broke off our second fish of the day. After another Blue Marlin that didn't bite, Danny Cline hooked, fought, caught, and released a 125 pound Blue Marlin on 20 pound class tippet, His fourth Blue Marlin on fly in his career. After noon, we raised a hot fish, it was cloudy and was hard to see the fish, it ate the fly and jumped, turned out that George Maybee caught this 90 pound Sailfish on fly and first of this trip. Later in the day, we raised 3 more Blue Marlin, two didn't bite, while the third ate a well placed pink Cam Sigler fly, cast by George Maybee. That 175 pound Blue Marlin ate the fly just before sunset, and put on a great show, jumping dozens of times, and fighting very hard for 25 minutes before George wound the leader inside of the tip top and catching our second Blue Marlin of the day, on Fly. For the day, we raised 8 Blue Marlin, George and Danny each got two bites, and each student/angler caught and released a Blue Marlin on Fly. So far, during the first year of my "Blue Marlin on fly Schools" held aboard the "Dragin Fly" in Costa Rica, every angler/student has caught and released at least one Blue Marlin on fly!

August, 14, 2014, We awoke at four AM near destination BM-X-2,  after a hot shower, some good coffee, and breakfast we deployed our teasers. At six AM we raised the first Blue Marlin of the day,  Danny Cline made a good cast, the Marlin ate the fly, took off like a rocket, got out several hundred yards and broke the 20# tippet, then we raised another fish that didn't eat, after which George hooked a big Blue Marlin, it jumped many times then "pow" the tippet broke. The guys then allowed me to make my first cast of the trip, my fish was red hot, he took out 200 yards, stayed on the surface, and jumped around in a big circle. I don't know how, however that Big Blue Marlin, changed directions, jumped again, and the fly fell out of his mouth. Let me tell you, this 200 pound Blue Marlin broke my streak, prior to this fish I had caught 13 marlin in a row from 13 bites, oh well, just have to start over and catch the next one!  By 8:00 AM we had raised 5 Blue Marlin, got bites from three of them, two were broken off, while my only cast spit the hook and came un-hooked.  We pulled the teasers in and ran for 30 miles to a spot we call destination BM-X-3 arriving at 11:00 AM where we slowed down and deployed our teasers. At 11:30 we raised a red hot Blue Marlin which teased in quickly, then very aggressively, that 250 pound fish attacked the fly, which was presented perfectly by Danny Cline. This was the best Blue marlin of the trip, he stayed on top, jumped dozens of times, and by 12 noon Danny had caught and released that wonderful Blue Marlin on fly, (His second of this trip and 5 in his lifetime). At 1:00 PM we pulled in the lines and headed back toward Los Suenos Marina for a hot shower and a good dinner before a good night sleep.
 
The total score for this Blue Marlin fly fishing School was: 5 Sailfish raised, 3 bites, two caught and released, 16 Blue Marlin Raised, 8 Bites, and 3 Blue Marlin caught and released on Fly! George Maybee caught his first ever Blue Marlin on fly along with a sailfish on fly, while Danny Cline caught a Sailfish and Two Blue Marlin on fly. Another successful Blue Marlin fly fishing school, I love my job, wish you were here, stay tuned for the next fly fishing for Blue Marlin report in a few days, I am heading back out! By the way I ran into my old friend Gary Carter, out at BM-X-2 this morning on his beautiful vessel "Silverado", I hope that Gary and his buddy's have a great Blue Marlin adventure.

Off to the FADs

We're heading out for another FAD trip, more fly fishing with our resident pro Jake Jordan and two of his guests.   I'll have another full report when they get back.

We went three for five on sailfish yesterday.  today we was one for three on sailfish and one for one with blue marlin.
